๐Ÿ“– 1 Kings Chapter 1 โ€“ Who Will Be the Next King?

๐Ÿ‘‘ When an old king must let go โ€” and a new one must learn to lead

๐ŸŒ… Introduction

King David had grown old.
His life had been full of adventures โ€”
he fought Goliath, defeated many enemies,
and again and again trusted God.
But now his strength was almost gone.
He could hardly get out of bed anymore.
The question was:
Who should be king after him?

Not everyone waited for a clear answer from God.
Some wanted to decide for themselves who would take the throne โ€ฆ

๐Ÿ“– The Bible story

David lay in his bed.
He was always cold, even when they covered him.
Everyone knew: the great king is old โ€” soon there would be a new ruler.

But David had not yet appointed a new king.

So the palace grew restless.

One of Davidโ€™s sons โ€” Adonijah โ€” thought to himself:

โ€œI am strong. I am handsome. I am Davidโ€™s son. I will be king!โ€

And he began to make himself king.

He gathered many people:
some important men, a priest, even the army commander Joab.
They held a big feast.
Adonijah cried out:

โ€œI am the new king of Israel!โ€

But not everyone joined in.

A priest named Zadok, the prophet Nathan,
and also Bathsheba, Davidโ€™s wife,
realized: this is not right.

Because David had someone else in mind:
his son Solomon โ€” a quiet, young man with a wise heart.

โš ๏ธ The Plan

The prophet Nathan went to Bathsheba and said:

โ€œAdonijah is crowning himself. But you know David wanted Solomon to be king.
We must speak with David โ€” before itโ€™s too late!โ€

Bathsheba went to David.
She reminded him:

โ€œMy lord, didnโ€™t you swear that Solomon should be your successor?
But now Adonijah has made himself king!โ€

David opened his eyes.
He was old โ€” but not foolish.

He called his faithful men:
Zadok, Nathan, and Benaiah.

And he said clearly and loudly:

โ€œMy son Solomon shall be king over Israel.
Bring my mule, anoint him as king,
and shout aloud:
โ€˜Long live King Solomon!โ€™โ€

๐ŸŽบ The True Coronation

So they went out.
Solomon sat on the royal mule.
They brought him to the spring of Gihon.
There he was anointed โ€” with holy oil.
The trumpets sounded.
The people shouted:

โ€œLong live King Solomon!โ€

All Jerusalem heard the cheering.
And Adonijahโ€™s feast?
It fell silent.
People became afraid.
Because they realized:
God chose the true king โ€” not Adonijah.

Adonijah was terrified.
He ran to the altar in the sanctuary and grabbed the horns โ€”
a sign meaning: โ€œDonโ€™t hurt me! I want to be spared!โ€

Solomon said:

โ€œIf he behaves peacefully, nothing will happen to him.โ€

And so Solomon was not only anointed,
but also a king with wisdom, patience, and heart.

๐ŸŸฃ Summary

David was old โ€” and it was time to let go.
Adonijah wanted to make himself king โ€” with power and tricks.
But God had a different way.
Solomon was chosen by the old king
and confirmed by God.

He did not become king out of pride โ€”
but out of calling.

๐Ÿ’š Message for Children Today

Not the one who is loud or acts strong
is the one God uses โ€”
but the one who listens to Him.

Solomon didnโ€™t push himself forward โ€”
he waited for Godโ€™s time.

And: even if you are young,
God can prepare you for great things.
He doesnโ€™t look only at age โ€”
but at your heart. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’ญ Thought Questions

๐Ÿ”น What can you learn from Solomon โ€” even if youโ€™re not a king?
๐Ÿ”น Why is it important not to want to decide everything on your own, but to ask God?
๐Ÿ”น Do you know someone who tried to make themselves important โ€” and it didnโ€™t end well?

๐Ÿ’Œ Invitation to 1 Kings Chapter 2

๐Ÿ‘‘ A final command โ€” and a king who must learn to be strong

David feels it: his time is over.
Before he dies, he calls his son Solomon to him one last time.
He does not give him riches โ€”
but advice and a clear mission.

Solomon is to become a just king.
But he must also act bravely and decisively when necessary.

Will Solomon be ready for this great responsibility?

๐Ÿ”” Teaser for Chapter 2

A new king.
A wise father.
And many unfinished matters.

David asks Solomon to keep Godโ€™s commandments โ€”
but also not to forget those who harmed the kingdom.

Solomon faces his first great decisions:

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ What should he do about Joab, the army commander?
๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ How should he deal with people who once turned against David?
๐Ÿ‘‘ And how do you show strength โ€” without losing your heart?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Chapter 2 is about responsibility, justice, and how to begin being a good king.
