The first chapter of the book of 1 Samuel does not begin with a king,
not with a warrior,
not with a prophet.
It begins with a woman — with Hannah.
She is childless.
She is wounded.
And she is deeply faithful.
In a society where fertility was considered a sign of divine blessing, Hannah was seen as “forgotten” — perhaps even “cursed.”
Yet this chapter shows us: God does not only hear the loud voices — He also hears the silent prayer of a woman standing on the margins.
It is a story of patience, grace, and faith — right in the midst of pain.

🟡 Commentary
At a time when Israel had no king, a personal tragedy unfolds in the house of Elkanah — a devout man with two wives: Peninnah, who has many children, and Hannah, who is barren.
Peninnah mocks Hannah regularly — year after year.
Every time the family travels to the sanctuary in Shiloh, Hannah is reminded of what she lacks: a child.
Although Elkanah loves her and tries to comfort her, he cannot heal her sorrow.
He asks, “Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
But love alone cannot replace what Hannah longs for with all her heart.
In a particularly painful moment — after being humiliated once again — Hannah gets up and goes to the sanctuary. There she begins to pray.
Not loudly, not visibly — but inwardly.
Her lips move, but her voice is not heard.
The old priest Eli misunderstands her. He thinks she is drunk — as many probably had been there before.
But Hannah is not drunk. She is broken — and full of faith.
She explains:
“I have poured out my heart before the LORD.”
This single sentence changes everything.
Eli recognizes her sincerity, her pain — and blesses her in the name of God.
Not long afterward, Hannah becomes pregnant.
She gives birth to a son and names him Samuel, which means: “Asked of God.”
But Hannah does not forget her vow.
As soon as Samuel is weaned, she brings him to the temple in Shiloh — to dedicate him completely to the service of God.
In an act of deepest devotion, she gives back to God what means the most to her.
And where her story began with tears, it ends in worship.
