π Introduction
After Queen Vashtiβs removal, the throne of the queen in the Persian Empire is vacant. What appears to be an ordinary political event becomes the beginning of a story that reveals Godβs hidden work. In Esther chapter 2, a young Jewish woman comes into focus, though she does not yet realize what significance her future will have.

𧡠Commentary
Some time after Vashtiβs removal, King Ahasuerus looks for a new queen. His servants suggest bringing young women from throughout the entire kingdom to Susa. There they are to be prepared for the king, so that he can choose a new queen from among them.
Among these young women is Esther. She is a Jewess and lives with her cousin Mordecai, who raised her like a daughter. Esther has lost her parents and grows up under Mordecaiβs care.
When Esther is brought to the royal palace, she quickly gains the favor of those in charge. Hegai in particular, the overseer of the women, treats her with kindness and takes care of her preparation.
During this time, Esther follows Mordecaiβs advice and does not reveal her Jewish background. No one at the court knows which people she belongs to.
Finally, the day comes when Esther appears before the king. Of all the women, she impresses him the most. Ahasuerus places the royal crown on her head and makes her the new queen of the Persian Empire.
What looks to many like a fortunate coincidence is part of a greater plan. God has brought Esther exactly to the place where she will later be needed.
At the end of the chapter, another important event takes place. Mordecai learns of an assassination plot against the king. Two court officials are planning to kill Ahasuerus.
Mordecai informs Esther, and Esther reports the conspiracy to the king. The matter is investigated, the guilty men are punished, and everything is recorded in the royal chronicles.
At first glance, this seems like only a side note. But later, this very record will play a decisive role.
The chapter impressively shows how God prepares events. People often see only individual situations, but God brings the separate parts of His plan together. Esther becomes queen. Mordecaiβs faithfulness is recorded. Things that seem insignificant will later become of great importance.

𧡠Commentary
The fields withered. Rivers shrank. Animals suffered. Cities were filled with worry.
But instead of turning back, many people clung even more tightly to their false gods.
The priests of Baal sacrificed, prayed, and pleaded. Day and night they asked for rain.
But heaven remained closed.
God showed His people that Baal had no power.
