π Introduction
The book of Esther begins in the mighty Persian Empire under King Ahasuerus. At first glance, God seems to play no role in this chapter. It is about feasts, wealth, power, and royal decisions. Yet behind the events, God is already preparing the stage for His later act of rescue.
β―β―β―β―β―β―β―β―β―β―ββ―β―β―β―β―β―β―β―β―β―
𧡠Commentary
King Ahasuerus rules over a vast empire that stretches from India to Ethiopia. To demonstrate his wealth and power, he holds a splendid feast for his officials, princes, and military leaders. For many days he displays the glory of his kingdom.
After this feast, the king holds another great banquet for the inhabitants of the capital city, Susa. While the men celebrate, Queen Vashti holds her own feast for the women of the palace.
At the height of the celebrations, Ahasuerus commands Vashti to appear before the guests. Her beauty is to be presented to those present. But surprisingly, the queen refuses to obey the command.
This decision triggers a crisis at the royal court.
The king becomes angry and consults with his advisers. They fear that Vashtiβs behavior might encourage other women in the empire to question the authority of their husbands.
As a result, it is decided that Vashti will be stripped of her royal position. An official decree is spread throughout the empire so that everyone will know about this decision.
Thus Vashtiβs story as queen comes to an end.
At first glance, this chapter seems like a report about political events and human power struggles. But behind the scenes, something significant is happening.
The place of the queen becomes vacant.
No one yet knows that this very development will prepare the way for Esther. What appears to be a random decision will later become an important part of Godβs plan to save His people.
The chapter also shows how fleeting human power is. The most powerful king of that time can hold feasts and issue commands, yet even he does not control the course of history.
While people make their decisions, God continues to work in the background.

𧡠Commentary
At the Brook Cherith, Elijah learned an important lesson. The prophet who had spoken before kings now had to wait.
Day after day he drank from the brook. God sent ravens to provide him with food.
While Israel suffered and searched for him, Elijah remained hidden under Godβs protection.
This time was not wasted. God was preparing His servant for greater tasks.
