⚖️ A Good Beginning – and a Dangerous Decision
🌅 Introduction
Sometimes something begins really well.
Someone makes wise decisions.
He listens to God.
He does what is right.
But then a thought enters the heart:
“I am strong.”
“I have won.”
“I can do this on my own.”
And that is exactly where it becomes dangerous.
Chapter 14 shows us
how important humility is.
📖 The Biblical Story
📖 A King with a Good Start
In Judah, Amaziah became king.
He was 25 years old when he took the throne.
At first he did what pleased the Lord.
Not perfectly—
but he wanted to walk in God’s ways.
When the men who had killed his father
were to be punished,
he acted justly.
He punished the guilty men—
but not their children.
For in God’s law it was written:
Everyone should be responsible for their own sin.
That was wise and right.
⚔️ A Great Victory
Later Amaziah went to war against Edom.
He gathered his army
and won a great victory.
Ten thousand enemies were defeated.
Amaziah was successful.
He was strong.
He had won.
But here the problem began.
Instead of thanking God
and remaining humble,
pride grew in his heart.
He felt unbeatable.
🦁 A Foolish Challenge
After his victory Amaziah sent a message
to Joash, the king of Israel:
“Come! Let us fight each other!”
Why?
Israel had not attacked him.
There was no reason for war.
But pride whispers:
“Show how strong you are.”
The king of Israel answered with a picture:
“A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar
and wanted its daughter to marry the cedar’s son.
But a wild animal came
and trampled the thistle.
You defeated Edom—
that is good.
But stay at home.
Why do you want to bring trouble on yourself?”
It was a warning.
But Amaziah did not listen.
💥 The Defeat
So the battle came.
And Judah lost.
Amaziah was captured.
The wall of Jerusalem was torn down.
Treasures from the temple were taken.
What began as a proud challenge
ended in shame.
Pride had made him blind.
🌱 Another King in the North
At the same time Jeroboam II ruled in Israel.
He also did not do what pleased God.
But God saw the suffering of His people.
Israel had become weak.
The people were suffering.
And even though they were not faithful to God,
God had compassion.
He helped them
and gave them back territory.
Not because they were so good—
but because God is gracious.
🟣 Summary
Amaziah began well.
He acted justly.
He won a victory.
But his pride brought him down.
He did not listen to warnings.
He overestimated himself.
And we also see:
God is gracious—
even when people are not faithful.
💚 Message for Children Today
Success is nice.
Winning feels good.
But never forget:
All strength comes from God.
If you become proud
and stop listening,
it can become dangerous.
Humility protects your heart.
And when God warns you—
listen.
