Lesson 6 focuses on the spiritual gifts that God gives to His church through the Holy Spirit. Paul shows that these gifts were not given for self-promotion or comparison, but for the building up of the body of Christ. Although the gifts are different, they all come from the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God. Love is especially important, because without love even impressive gifts lose their spiritual value. Gifts such as speaking in tongues and prophecy must also be used intelligibly, in an orderly manner, and in harmony with Holy Scripture. This lesson invites us to use our gifts humbly, faithfully, and for the glory of Christ.

✨ 6.1 A Variety of Gifts
🤲 Different Gifts, One Spirit, and a Common Ministry
Paul shows that spiritual gifts do not arise from human ability alone, but are given by the Holy Spirit. The first and most fundamental work of the Spirit is the confession that Jesus is Lord. Although there are many different gifts, ministries, and activities, they all come from the same God and are intended to lead not to division, but to unity. Every believer receives gifts according to God’s will, not for personal honor, but for the benefit of the entire church. Therefore, no one should place their gift above the gifts of others or feel inferior, because every gift is important within the body of Christ. Spiritual diversity becomes a blessing when it is lived under the lordship of Jesus and in the love of the Spirit.

🤝 One Body, Many Members, and One Common Mission
Paul describes the church as a body with many members in order to show that unity and diversity belong together. Every believer has a particular gift, but no gift is complete on its own or more important than all the others. Just as every part of the body is needed, every ministry in the church is valuable and necessary. No one should exalt themselves above others because of their gift, and no one should think that they are not needed. Spiritual gifts fulfill their true purpose only when they are used in love to build up the body of Christ. Unity does not arise through uniformity, but through all the members working together under Christ.

🌟 Love as the Heart and Standard of All Spiritual Gifts
Paul shows that spiritual gifts lose their true value without love. Even impressive gifts such as knowledge, prophecy, faith, or speaking in tongues can become empty and even disruptive when they are not carried by love. Love is not merely a feeling, but is revealed through patience, kindness, humility, truth, forgiveness, and endurance. It protects the church from gifts being misused for self-promotion, pride, or division. Therefore, love is the better way because it directs every gift toward Christ and toward building up others. Those who have experienced God’s love are called to make that love visible in their relationships with others.

📖 Understandable Words for Building Up the Church
Paul does not reject the gift of tongues, but regulates its use spiritually and practically. When someone speaks in a foreign language, the message must be understood or interpreted so that the church may be built up. A gift that merely attracts attention but helps no one fails to fulfill its purpose. Therefore, Paul emphasizes order, intelligibility, and consideration during worship. Speaking in tongues is not proof of superior spirituality, nor is it a requirement for being filled with the Holy Spirit. Genuine spiritual gifts always serve to bear witness to Christ and lead people closer to God.
📜 6.5 The Gift of Prophecy
🔥 Prophecy for the Edification, Exhortation, and Strengthening of the Church
Paul shows that the gift of prophecy holds a special place among the spiritual gifts because it builds up, admonishes, and comforts the church. Prophecy does not mean only predicting future events, but above all communicating God’s message for the present. Therefore, every prophetic message must be tested by Holy Scripture and must agree with the character of Christ. Genuine prophecy does not lead to confusion, pride, or the exaltation of human beings, but closer to Jesus and to a faithful life with God. For Seventh-day Adventists, the gift of prophecy is a special characteristic of the remnant church and is recognized in the ministry of Ellen White. Nevertheless, the Bible remains the highest standard by which every spiritual gift and every prophetic message must be tested.
