πŸŒ™ Esther Chapter 6 – The Night the King Could Not Sleep

πŸ“œ When a forgotten event suddenly becomes important

πŸŒ… Introduction

While Haman had gone home satisfied and had a dangerous plan prepared against Mordecai, not everything in the palace had yet been decided. Esther had not yet spoken her request, Mordecai knew nothing about the gallows being built for him, and the king had no idea that his most important adviser wanted to kill an innocent man.

From the outside, it may have looked as if Haman had everything under control. He had power, influence, and a plan for the next morning. But that same night, something very quiet happened that would change the whole story.

The king could not sleep.

Sometimes God’s help does not begin with a great sign in the sky. Sometimes it begins with a sleepless night, an old book, and a memory that is found again at exactly the right time.

πŸ“– The Biblical Story

πŸŒ™ A Sleepless Night in the Palace

That night, King Ahasuerus lay awake. Perhaps he tossed and turned restlessly. Perhaps the palace was quiet while the city outside slept. Servants stood ready, and no one knew why the king could find no rest.

Finally, Ahasuerus ordered that the chronicles of the kingdom be read to him. These were books in which important events were recorded. Perhaps the king thought the calm reading would make him sleepy.

But while they were reading, the servants came across an old story. It said that Mordecai had once discovered a dangerous plan against the king. Two men had wanted to harm the king, but Mordecai noticed the danger and reported it.

The king listened carefully. Then he asked what honor Mordecai had received for this.

The servants answered that nothing had been done for him.

πŸšͺ Haman Comes at the Wrong Time

On that very night, Haman had come early to the palace. He had a completely different plan. He wanted to ask the king to let Mordecai be hanged on the gallows he had prepared.

But before Haman could even make his request, the king asked him an unexpected question.

Ahasuerus wanted to know what should be done for a man whom the king especially wished to honor.

Haman immediately thought of himself. In his proud heart, he could hardly imagine that the king might mean someone else. Who could deserve more honor than he?

So Haman suggested something very special. The man should wear royal clothing, be led through the city on the king’s horse, and a high-ranking prince should proclaim before him that this is how the man whom the king wishes to honor is honored.

Perhaps Haman was already imagining how all the people would admire him.

😲 An Unexpected Turn

Then the king said something Haman had never expected. He was to do exactly what he had suggested β€” but not for himself.

He was to honor Mordecai.

For Haman, this moment must have been terrible. The man he wanted to kill was to be publicly honored. And Haman himself was the one who had to lead him through the city.

But the king had spoken. Haman could not object.

So he had to put royal clothing on Mordecai, set him on the king’s horse, and lead him through the streets of Susa. Before all the people, he had to proclaim that this is how the man whom the king wishes to honor is honored.

The people in the city saw it. Mordecai was honored, and Haman had to serve.

🏠 Haman’s Joy Disappears

After everything had happened, Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. He remained the same faithful man he had been before.

But Haman hurried home. His joy had disappeared. He was ashamed and full of worry.

At home, he told his wife and his friends what had happened. They listened and realized that the situation had changed.

Then they told him something that surely made him even more afraid. If Mordecai truly belonged to the Jewish people and Haman had already begun to fall before him, then he would not win against him.

While they were still talking, the king’s servants arrived. They hurriedly brought Haman to the second banquet that Esther had prepared.

🌟 God Turns the Story Around

In the morning, Haman had believed he would get rid of Mordecai. By evening, he had to go to the queen’s banquet while Mordecai had been honored.

Everything had changed without Esther having spoken yet. Without a battle, without loud signs, and without anyone fully understanding the plan, God began to turn the story around.

A sleepless night, an old book, and a forgotten good deed became important parts of God’s plan of rescue.

Haman had made his plans, but God was already ahead of him.

We also see that God does not forget good deeds. Mordecai had not been rewarded for a long time, but at the right time his faithfulness became visible.
