ποΈ 2 Kings 11 β The Hidden King β Preservation in Dark Times
β¨ How courage and faithfulness protect Godβs plan even when violence and the lust for power rule.
π Read online here
π Introduction
Chapter 11 appears like a dramatic turning point in the history of Israel and Judah. After political upheavals and bloody changes of power, the Davidic royal line seems almost completely wiped out. Yet precisely in this dark phase, Godβs quiet work becomes visible through courageous people working behind the scenes. The story reminds us that hope sometimes grows hidden before it becomes visible.

𧡠Commentary
After Ahaziah, the king of Judah, dies, his mother Athaliah seizes power. To secure her rule, she orders all royal descendants to be killed. It is a shocking moment: the line of David, to which God had once promised endurance, seems about to end. Violence and fear dominate the situation.
But in the midst of this chaos, a woman acts quietly in the background. Jehosheba, a sister of the deceased king, rescues the little Joash, one of the princes, from the massacre. Together with her husband, the priest Jehoiada, she hides the child in the temple of the Lord. For six years the boy grows up in secrecy while Athaliah rules without knowing.
These years are marked by patience and quiet trust. Jehoiada waits for the right moment. Finally he devises a bold plan. He gathers the commanders of the royal guard and binds them by oath to the cause of the rightful king. In the temple he organizes a carefully planned ceremony in which the young Joash is publicly presented as king.
The decisive moment arrives: Joash receives the crown, the testimony of the law is given to him, and the people cry out, βLong live the king!β Music sounds and rejoicing fills the temple. Athaliah hears the noise, rushes in, and immediately realizes that her rule is over. She cries, βTreason!β but her power collapses. By order of Jehoiada she is put to death outside the temple so that the holy place will not be defiled.
After this upheaval, a new beginning follows. Jehoiada makes a covenant between God, the king, and the people. The people destroy the temple of Baal and renew the worship of the Lord. Joash, still a child, takes the throneβa sign that Godβs promises remain firm despite threats.
The chapter ends with a picture of calm and order. After years of fear, peace returns.

π¦ Message for us today
This chapter shows that Godβs plans continue even in situations that appear hopeless. Often it is not the loudest or most powerful people who make the decisive difference, but those who act faithfully and courageously behind the scenes. Hope may remain invisible for a long time before it comes into the light.
The story also reminds us how important spiritual leadership and shared responsibility are when societies or individuals face crises.

π Reflection
Where might I feel that I am in a βhidden time,β when nothing seems to be growing yet?
And how can Iβlike Jehosheba and Jehoiadaβact faithfully even when the results will only become visible later?

𧡠Commentary
The constant threats wear down Davidβs soul. He begins to doubt whether Godβs promise will ever be fulfilled.
Without seeking Godβs counsel, he flees again to the Philistines.
Outwardly it seems wiseβsecurity, protection, a place of his own called Ziklag. But inwardly it is a step of mistrust.
He deceives Achish. He hides his true intentions. His character begins to show subtle cracks.
Not open rebellionβ
but a weary faith.
