The wall of Jerusalem is finished, the gates have been installed, and the city is protected again. But Jerusalem still has one problem: it lacks inhabitants. Many people prefer to live in the surrounding villages and towns. Therefore, Nehemiah chapter 11 deals with the question of who is willing not only to help with the rebuilding, but also to take lasting responsibility for the future of Jerusalem.

🧵 Commentary
After the city wall was completed, Nehemiah recognizes a new challenge. Jerusalem has protection through the walls, but many areas of the city are still empty. A city needs more than buildings and fortifications. It needs people who live there, work there, and take responsibility.
Therefore, the leaders of the people decide to increase Jerusalem’s population. By casting lots, it is determined that every tenth inhabitant from the surrounding areas should move to Jerusalem. At the same time, there are people who volunteer to live in the city.
These volunteers are especially honored. They give up the comfort of their former lives and take on an important task for the community. Their commitment shows that God’s work is not carried only by leaders, but by many people who are willing to take their place.
The chapter then lists various families and groups living in Jerusalem. These include men from Judah and Benjamin, priests, Levites, gatekeepers, and singers. Each fulfills a specific task. Some serve in the temple, while others care for order and security.
The many names may seem insignificant to modern readers, but they carry an important meaning. They show that God knows each individual. No one is just a number. Each person contributes their part to the life of the city and to the community of God’s people.
Alongside the inhabitants of Jerusalem, those who continue to live in the other cities of Judah are also mentioned. This creates the picture of a people living in different places, yet serving God together.
Nehemiah makes it clear that the rebuilding of Jerusalem is not completed with the finishing of the wall. Now the task is to build a healthy and living community. For this, people are needed who are willing to take responsibility and serve faithfully in the place where God has put them.

A lonely prophet stands against the current of apostasy
📍 Introduction
In a time of spiritual darkness, when King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were leading Israel deeper and deeper into idolatry, God called a simple man from the mountains of Gilead. Elijah had neither political power nor a high position. His strength lay in his faith, his prayer, and his unwavering trust in God. Through him, God began to awaken His people.

🧵 Commentary
Elijah lived far from palaces and cities. From the heights of Gilead, he watched with sorrow as Israel forgot the living God. Altars to Baal were erected everywhere, while God’s commandments were disregarded. His heart broke over the condition of the people.
Day after day, he wrestled with God in prayer. He saw that human words and prophetic warnings had hardly any effect anymore. Therefore, he asked the Lord to intervene through judgments so that the people would recognize their lost condition.
God heard his prayer and gave him an extraordinary commission. Elijah was to appear before King Ahab and announce that neither dew nor rain would fall until God allowed it again.
Without hesitation, the prophet set out. Courageously, he stood before the powerful king and spoke the words of judgment. Then he disappeared again as suddenly as he had come.

Elijah appears as a courageous prophet of God. He recognizes Israel’s spiritual decline and becomes God’s instrument to call the people to repentance.
