π 2 Chronicles Chapter 34 β The Young King Josiah
π When a lost book changes everything
π Introduction
Some people are special already as children. Not because they are stronger or smarter than others, but because they learn early to listen to God.
This is how the story of Josiah begins. When he becomes king of Judah, he is only eight years old. The people in the land have gone through difficult times. Many kings before him did not obey God. Images of idols stand everywhere, and many people have forgotten how important Godβs Word is.
But God has a special plan for the young king. What begins with a child on a throne will later change the whole people.
π The Biblical Story
π¦ A young king with a great heart
When Josiah becomes king, many people watch him with interest. Eight years old β that is an age when most children are still playing, learning, and experiencing adventures. But Josiah suddenly carries a great responsibility.
As he grows older, he observes what is happening in his land. He sees the many places where people worship foreign gods. He recognizes that Judah has moved far away from God.
But Josiah does not want to follow the same path as some kings before him. Already as a young man, he begins to seek God. He wants to know what is right. He wants to please God.
The more he thinks about God, the stronger his desire becomes to change the land. He understands that a king does not only rule over people. A good king should also lead his people to God.
So the decision grows in Josiah to do something about all the false altars and images of idols.
π οΈ A great cleanup day throughout the whole land
When Josiah grows older, he begins to act. Throughout the whole land, he has the places destroyed where foreign gods are worshiped. Altars are torn down, images of idols are smashed, and sacred poles are removed.
For many people, this is a huge change. For years, these things had been part of everyday life. Some can hardly imagine that everything should become different.
But Josiah remains determined. He wants Judah to return to God.
His helpers go from city to city. Everywhere, things are cleaned up. Step by step, the signs of idol worship disappear from the land.
It is not an easy task. It takes time, strength, and courage. But Josiah does not give up.
He knows that a true new beginning sometimes starts by first clearing away everything that stands in the way.
ποΈ The temple should become beautiful again
After many things in the land have been renewed, Josiah turns his attention to the temple of God in Jerusalem.
The temple had once been the center of the people. But over the years, many things had been neglected. Repairs were needed, and some areas were in poor condition.
So Josiah appoints workers, craftsmen, and overseers to restore the temple. Money is collected, building materials are obtained, and work begins everywhere.
The people work diligently. Stonecutters, carpenters, and many others help. Little by little, new life awakens in the house of God.
While the tools sound and the workers carry out their tasks, no one yet suspects that something will soon be found that is more important than all the stones and beams of the temple.
π The surprising discovery
One day, something unexpected happens.
During the work, the high priest Hilkiah discovers a scroll. It is the Book of the Law of God.
Perhaps he holds the scroll carefully in his hands. Perhaps he immediately recognizes how valuable this discovery is.
The scroll is brought to Shaphan, the kingβs secretary. As Shaphan reads from it, the people listen attentively.
Then he brings the scroll to King Josiah.
The young king hears the words of God. He hears commandments, instructions, and warnings. The longer he listens, the more he realizes how far the people have moved away from Godβs ways.
Suddenly Josiah understands why so many things have gone wrong.
The people had forgotten Godβs Word.
π’ A king is deeply shaken
The words of the scroll touch Josiah deeply in his heart. The Bible reports that he tears his clothes β a sign of great sorrow and shock.
He recognizes that the people have not obeyed God for a long time. Many commandments were forgotten or ignored.
Josiah does not simply continue as before. Nor does he pretend that nothing has happened.
Instead, he wants to know what God will say now.
So he sends some of his men to the prophetess Huldah. They are to ask God what the discovered scroll means for the people.
Josiah knows: when God speaks, we must listen.
ποΈ A serious but hopeful message
The prophetess Huldah delivers Godβs answer.
She explains that many of the announced consequences will indeed come, because the people have abandoned God for so long.
But she also has a special message for Josiah.
Because his heart remained tender and because he listened to Godβs Word, God will show him grace. Josiah did not place himself above Godβs words. He took them seriously.
This message makes clear how important an obedient heart is to God.
God does not see only what people do outwardly. He also sees how they respond to Him inwardly.
π The people hear Godβs Word
Josiah does not want to be the only one to hear Godβs words. So he gathers the leaders, the priests, and many people from the whole nation.
Together they come to Jerusalem.
There the discovered scroll is read aloud.
The people listen attentively. Perhaps some hear these words for the first time in their lives. Others may remember things they had long forgotten.
Then Josiah makes a covenant with God. He promises to follow the Lord with all his heart and to keep His commandments.
The people agree as well.
For a moment, the center is not a king and not a large building project.
At the center is Godβs Word.
π A new beginning starts
This chapter ends with hope. The people are not yet perfect, and many challenges still lie ahead. But something important has changed.
The people have found Godβs Word again.
Not merely as an old scroll lying somewhere in the temple, but as a living message for their lives.
Josiah shows that true change does not begin with buildings, but in the heart. Only when he listens to Godβs Word can the people also change.
And so an old discovery in the temple becomes one of the most important moments in the history of Judah.
π What this chapter shows
This chapter shows how important Godβs Word is. When Josiah finds the scroll and takes its words seriously, a true new beginning starts.
We also learn that God rejoices over people who are willing to listen and to align their lives with His ways.
π£ Summary
Josiah becomes king while still a child and seeks God with all his heart. He has the images of idols in the land destroyed and the temple restored. During the work, the Book of the Law of God is found. When Josiah hears its words, he is deeply shaken and seeks Godβs counsel. Afterward, he gathers the people, reads Godβs Word aloud, and renews the covenant with the Lord.
π Message for children today
Godβs Word can change our lives. If we are willing to listen, God shows us the right way.
