π¨ 2 Kings Chapter 12 β A Young King and Godβs House
ποΈ A Good Beginning β and an Important Decision
π Introduction
Do you know this?
Something begins really well.
You are motivated.
You want to do everything right.
But what happens
when the person who guided you
is no longer there?
Do you remain faithful?
Or do you change?
Chapter 12 tells about a king
who began as a childβ
and as an adult had to decide
which path he wanted to follow.
π The Biblical Story
π A Young King
Joash was only seven years old
when he became king.
Seven!
Other children learn to read and writeβ
but Joash sat on the throne.
Fortunately, he was not alone.
The priest Jehoiada helped him.
He showed him Godβs ways.
He explained the law of the Lord to him.
And as long as Jehoiada lived,
Joash did what pleased God.
But there was a problem.
βͺ A Damaged Temple
The temple in Jerusalem was in bad condition.
During the time of Athaliah,
many things had been neglected.
Parts were broken.
Some things had even been used for false idols.
Godβs house was no longer cared for.
Joash wanted to change that.
He commanded the priests:
βCollect money for the temple.
Repair the damage!β
It was a good plan.
But the years passedβ
and nothing happened.
The temple remained damaged.
π° A New Idea
In the 23rd year of his reign,
Joash called the priests.
βWhy are you not repairing the temple?
Do not take money for yourselves anymoreβ
it should only be used for repairs!β
Then Joash had an idea.
A chest was placed next to the altar.
A hole was made in the lid.
When people came to the temple,
they could voluntarily throw money into it.
And they gave gladly.
When the chest was full,
the royal secretary
and the high priest counted the money.
Then it was given directly to the craftsmen.
Carpenters.
Masons.
Stonecutters.
They worked faithfully.
And the special thing was:
they did not need to be constantly supervised.
They were honest.
So the temple was renewed piece by piece.
Godβs house became strong again.
βοΈ A Difficult Decision
But not everything remained peaceful.
The king of Aram, Hazael,
came with his army.
He threatened Jerusalem.
Joash became afraid.
Instead of seeking God first,
he made another decision.
He took gold and sacred objects
from the templeβ
and sent them as a gift to Hazael.
The enemy withdrew.
The city was saved.
But it was a sad moment:
Treasures from Godβs house
had been given away.
This time Joash had not asked God first.
π The End of a King
Joash ruled for many years.
He had begun well.
He had renewed the temple.
But after Jehoiada died,
his heart changed.
In the end he was even
killed by his own servants.
His son Amaziah became king.
π£ Summary
Joash began well.
He loved Godβs house.
He cared about the temple.
He listened to good guidance.
But later he made decisions out of fear.
And he did not always remain faithful.
A good beginning is important.
But a faithful heart until the end
is even more important.
