🌊 Job Chapter 26 – Job Marvels at God’s Power
🌀 When God’s Creation Fills Us with Wonder
🌅 Introduction
In the previous chapter, Bildad had spoken only briefly. He had spoken about God’s rule, God’s purity, and the smallness of human beings. His words sounded reverent and serious. God truly is great, pure, and powerful. Job did not doubt that.
Yet Bildad’s speech had not really helped Job. It was like a star shining high in the sky but unable to warm the cold hands of a sorrowful person down on the earth. Job did not need only great words about God. He needed comfort, truth, and someone who understood his distress.
Now Job answers. First, he shows Bildad that his words had brought no real help. Bildad had spoken about God’s greatness, but he had not strengthened Job in his weakness. He had mentioned wisdom, but he had not answered Job’s questions.
Then Job himself lifts his eyes. He shows that he too knows God’s power. He speaks about mysterious depths, the heavens, the clouds, the sea, light, and darkness. Job sees traces of God throughout all creation.
This chapter tells us that God’s greatness reaches far beyond what human beings can understand. Job marvels at God’s power and at the same time recognizes that everything we see of God is only a small edge of His ways. How great must God be if even this quiet whisper fills us with wonder?
📖 The Biblical Story
🗣️ Job Asks Whom Bildad Has Actually Helped
Job began his answer with questions that sounded very direct. In effect, he asked Bildad: Whom have you helped with your words? Have you truly given strength to the weak? Have you supported an arm without strength?
These questions were not simply meant to be rude. Job wanted to show that Bildad’s speech may have sounded beautiful, but it had not reached his pain. Bildad had spoken about God’s greatness, but Job was still sitting there sick, sad, and misunderstood.
When someone is very tired, it does not help much simply to say that mountains are high and stars are bright. That may be true, but the tired person also needs a hand to hold them. Job asks Bildad: Where was that helping hand in your words?
In this way, Job makes clear that true wisdom does not merely speak grandly. True wisdom bends down toward the weak. It strengthens, comforts, and listens. Bildad’s words had not done that.
🧠 Job Questions the Wisdom Behind the Words
Job continued by asking whom Bildad had advised. Had he really helped someone without wisdom to understand more? Had he revealed deep knowledge? Or had he merely repeated familiar phrases without understanding Job’s situation?
Bildad had spoken about God’s greatness. But Job also knew God’s greatness. Job was not ignorant. He had not forgotten that God is powerful and holy. His problem was not that he knew too little about God’s greatness.
His pain was much deeper. He knew that God is great, and precisely for that reason he asked why God allowed him to suffer so greatly. He knew that God is just, and precisely for that reason he asked why injustice sometimes remains visible for so long.
Job shows Bildad: Your words have not truly touched my questions. You have spoken about God, but not in a way that could carry my heart.
🫧 Words Can Be Empty or Helpful
Job also asked whose spirit had spoken through Bildad. That was a serious question. He wanted to know whether Bildad’s speech truly came from deep wisdom or only from the desire to be right.
Sometimes people say correct things, but their hearts are not loving. Then their words feel empty. They may sound wise, but they do not help. Other words may be simple, but they come from love and can bring comfort.
For children, we can imagine it this way: If someone falls and hurts their knee, one child may stand nearby and say, “You should have been more careful.” That may be true, but it does not help. Another child says, “Come, I’ll help you get up.” That is comfort.
Job had heard too many words from his friends that sounded like the first sentence. He needed words that would lift him up.
🌌 Job Looks into the Mysterious Depths
After Job had answered Bildad, he began speaking about God’s power himself. He showed that God’s rule extends not only over what is visible, but also over what is hidden.
Job spoke about the dead and about the depths beneath the waters. For people in those days, these places were mysterious and frightening. No one could explore them as they might explore a garden or a road.
But Job says that God’s power reaches even there. No place is so deep that God does not know it. No region is so hidden that it lies outside His sight.
That is a tremendous thought. Human beings see only a little. God also sees what is hidden. His rule does not end where our eyes can no longer reach.
🕳️ Nothing Is Hidden from God
Job says that the realm of the dead lies open before God. This means that even what is dark and closed to human beings is not hidden from God.
People can keep secrets. They can close doors, hide things, or act as though no one sees. But nothing is truly hidden from God.
For Job, this was both comforting and frightening. It was comforting because God could see Job’s truth, which his friends did not understand. It was frightening because God’s gaze reaches so deeply that no person can hide from Him.
In this way, Job shows that God’s knowledge is far greater than human knowledge. Bildad did not need to explain that to him. Job himself knew it and spoke about it with words full of wonder.
🌍 God Hangs the Earth upon Nothing
Then Job says something truly astonishing: God stretches out the north over empty space and hangs the earth upon nothing. This image helps us see the earth as something small and wonderful.
We can imagine a child looking up at night and asking: How does everything hold together? Why does the earth not simply fall away? Why do heaven and earth remain in order?
Job says: God holds everything. The earth does not remain secure because human beings can carry it. No king, builder, or strong person holds it in place. God is the One who upholds the world by His power.
This image awakens wonder. Every day we walk on the earth, build houses, plant trees, and travel along roads. Yet beneath everything is God’s mysterious power, sustaining creation.
☁️ God Binds Water in the Clouds
Job then turns his attention to the clouds. He says that God binds water in His clouds without the clouds tearing under its weight. Anyone who has seen dark rain clouds knows how heavy they can appear.
Clouds can carry enormous amounts of water. They move across the sky, gather rain, and release it again at the right time. For Job, this is no accident, but a sign of God’s power.
For children, we might picture it as a great soft cloth in the sky carrying water without bursting. Of course, today we know more about clouds, but the wonder remains: the world is ordered in a marvelous way.
Job sees God’s hand in all of this. The rain, the clouds, and the sky remind us that God rules creation wisely and powerfully.
🌕 God Hides His Throne
Job also speaks of God covering His throne and spreading clouds over it. This image shows that God is King, but His kingship is not fully visible to human beings.
We can recognize many things about God’s work, but we do not see everything. God’s throne remains hidden. His plans are deeper than people can simply look into.
This fits Job’s own experience very well. He knows that God rules, but he does not understand why God is leading him along such a painful path. God’s throne is there, yet it is covered by clouds.
Sometimes people experience exactly this: they believe that God rules, but they do not understand His decisions. Job knows this tension very well.
🌊 God Sets a Boundary for the Waters
Then Job describes how God sets a boundary for the waters, where light and darkness meet. For many people in those days, the sea was a picture of power, danger, and depth. Waves can be strong, storms can be frightening, and the water can seem impossible to control.
But Job says that God sets limits. The sea is great, but it is not greater than God. The waters may roar, but they cannot rise beyond God’s power.
Children can imagine a beach. The waves roll in one after another. They seem strong. Yet they do not simply keep moving forward forever. There are boundaries that God has placed within creation.
This image shows God’s rule over chaos. Where human beings become afraid, God remains powerful. Nothing in creation has escaped His control.
⛰️ The Pillars of Heaven Tremble
Job goes on to describe how the pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at God’s rebuke. This is poetic language. It shows how overwhelming God’s power is.
It sounds as though even what seems most solid and highest trembles before God. Heaven, earth, sea, and the depths do not exist independently of Him. All creation remains small before the Creator.
When a storm comes and thunder rolls across the mountains, we sense a little of such power. The sky seems to shake, and people become quiet. Job uses these great images to show God’s power.
But he does not do this superficially. He knows God’s greatness not only from beautiful songs. He speaks about it in the middle of suffering. That gives his words a special depth.
🐉 God Overcomes the Sea and Its Powers
Job also speaks of God stirring or calming the sea by His power and crushing Rahab by His wisdom. Here Rahab is a symbolic picture of a dangerous power of chaos, something great and threatening.
The exact image may be difficult for children, but the message is clear: even the strongest and most frightening powers are no match for God. God can rule over what frightens people.
We can imagine a vast, wild sea raging in a storm. Human beings may be afraid of such power. But God remains greater than the waves, greater than the storm, and greater than everything threatening.
Job recognizes that God’s power reaches not only over the beautiful parts of creation, but also over what is wild, dark, and dangerous.
🌬️ God’s Breath Makes the Sky Clear
Then Job says that by God’s breath the heavens become beautiful and clear. After a storm, the sky can suddenly grow bright. The clouds move away, and light can be seen again.
This image is gentler than the pictures of the sea and trembling. It shows God’s power not only as thunder, but also as a breath that brings clarity. God can bring order, cleanse, and reveal beauty.
Job looks at creation with eyes full of wonder. He recognizes God’s traces in the depths, in the heavens, in the clouds, in the sea, and in the light.
And yet his own situation remains dark. That does not make his wonder any less real. Sometimes a person can see God’s greatness in the world and still be waiting for an answer in their own heart.
🌀 Only the Outskirts of God’s Ways
At the end, Job says something very important: All these great things are only the outskirts of God’s ways. What we hear of Him is only a faint whisper. Who can understand the thunder of His power?
This means that even when we look at the earth, the clouds, the sea, the stars, and the mysterious depths, we see only a small part of God’s greatness. God is infinitely greater than human beings can understand.
For children, we can imagine a huge book. Perhaps we see only the edge of one page and are already amazed. But God knows the whole book. He is greater than everything we can read, see, and understand.
With this, Job also says to his friends: Do not speak as though you have fully explained God. If even the outskirts of His ways are so mighty, then human beings should remain humble.
🌟 Wonder Makes Us Humble
Job’s answer shows that he knows God’s greatness very well. He does not need Bildad to tell him that God is powerful. But Job also knows that God’s greatness is far more mysterious than his friends imagine.
The friends often use God’s greatness to silence Job. But Job looks at God’s greatness and says: That is exactly why your simple answers are too small. God is greater than your quick explanation of guilt and punishment.
This chapter invites us to wonder. Creation is full of signs of God’s power. Clouds, water, earth, sky, and sea tell us that God is greater than we are.
But wonder should not make us hard. It should make us humble. If God’s ways are so great, then we should be careful before judging the suffering of other people.
🌅 What This Chapter Shows
This chapter shows that Bildad’s short speech had not really helped Job. Job makes clear that words about God are comforting only when they also strengthen the weak and reveal true wisdom.
This chapter also shows God’s tremendous power in creation. Job speaks about the depths, the earth, the clouds, the sea, the heavens, and mysterious powers. Yet in the end he says: All of this is only the outskirts of God’s ways.

Job answers Bildad and asks whom his words have actually helped. Although Bildad had spoken about God’s greatness, he had not comforted Job or answered his questions. Then Job himself shows that he knows God’s power. He says that nothing is hidden from God, that God hangs the earth upon nothing, binds water in the clouds, sets boundaries for the sea, and rules even the mightiest powers. Job marvels at God’s greatness, but at the same time says that all these wonders are only the outskirts of His ways. God’s full power is far greater than human beings can understand.
💚 Message for Children Today
When we look at the world, we can marvel at God’s greatness. The sky, the clouds, the sea, the earth, and the light remind us that God is powerful, wise, and wonderful.
But this wonder should also make us humble. We do not understand everything about God and His ways. That is why we should be careful when judging other people and remain kind when someone is suffering.

Now Job will continue speaking. He will show that he does not want to give up his integrity. Despite pain, accusations, and dark questions, he stands firm: he will not lie or pretend to be guilty merely to satisfy his friends.
