π Ezra Chapter 6 β The Kingβs Answer
π When God Opens a Closed Door
π Introduction
The people in Jerusalem had found the courage to begin building the temple again. For many years, the construction site had been silent, but now work was happening once more. Stones were moved, walls were built, and plans were made.
But one big question still hung over everything. Governor Tattenai had sent a letter to the Persian king. In it, he asked for an investigation. Had King Cyrus really allowed the temple to be rebuilt?
While the builders went about their work each day, they waited for the answer. No one knew how the king would decide. The future of the temple depended on a document that might be hidden somewhere in the archives of the enormous Persian Empire.
This chapter tells how God opened, at exactly the right time, a door that had long seemed closed.
π The Biblical Story
π The Search for a Forgotten Decree
After the governorβs letter reached the king, a search was ordered. In the archives of the empire, the officials were to look for old documents. Somewhere among countless scrolls and records, the answer to the important question had to be hidden.
Perhaps some people in Jerusalem expected news to arrive every day. Perhaps with every caravan appearing in the distance, they wondered whether it was bringing an update.
Meanwhile, the officials searched the royal archives. The task was not easy. The Persian Empire was huge, and countless documents had accumulated over many years.
But finally, something amazing happened. In a fortress called Ecbatana, a scroll was found. When the officials opened it, they discovered exactly what they had been looking for.
It was written there that King Cyrus had indeed given the command to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
The permission was real.
The decree truly existed.
And now the proof lay before the eyes of the king.
π A Surprising Decision
The Persian king Darius carefully read the old decree. Now he knew that the Jewish leaders had spoken the truth. They had not invented anything or deceived anyone.
But Darius did more than many would have expected.
He not only confirmed King Cyrusβs permission. He also commanded that no one was allowed to hinder the construction work. The opponents were to stay away from the temple building and leave the workers in peace.
For the people in Jerusalem, this news must have been like a ray of sunshine after a long time of uncertainty. For years, they had experienced others trying to prevent the rebuilding. Now the king himself stood behind their project.
But the surprises were not over yet.
π° Help from an Unexpected Direction
Darius ordered that the costs of building the temple should be paid from the royal tax revenues of the region. The work was not to be delayed simply because materials or money were lacking.
The priests were also to receive everything they needed for their sacrifices. Animals, grain, salt, wine, and oil were to be provided for them regularly.
The king hoped that the priests would pray for him and his family. That is why he wanted to make sure they lacked nothing.
When these instructions reached Jerusalem, many people could hardly believe what they were hearing. The very empire that had once ruled over them was now supporting the rebuilding of the temple.
Once again, it became clear that God can open ways no one expected.
ποΈ The Work Moves Forward
Now the construction could continue without interruption. The people worked diligently, and the prophets Haggai and Zechariah continued to encourage them with their messages.
Stone by stone, the building grew. What for many years had been only an unfinished structure slowly began to take shape.
The workers could see how their effort was paying off. The walls grew higher, the rooms began to form, and it became clearer and clearer what the temple would one day look like.
Perhaps there were still tiring days. Perhaps some people became weary or impatient. But now they had certainty. The building was allowed to continue.
God had cleared the way.
π A Day Full of Joy
Finally, the great day came for which the people had waited so long.
The temple was finished.
Many years had passed since the first returnees had come to Jerusalem. They had experienced hopes and gone through disappointments. They had faced opposition and had to endure long times of waiting.
Now they stood before the completed house of God.
The joy was great. The people gathered for the dedication of the temple and offered sacrifices. Priests and Levites took up their duties, and gratitude could be felt everywhere.
What had once seemed like an unreachable dream had become reality.
God had not forgotten his people.
π A Special Passover Feast
Shortly after the dedication, the people celebrated the Passover feast. This feast reminded them of how God had once freed their ancestors from Egypt.
Now they celebrated it with special joy. For they too had experienced how God had helped. He had brought them back from a foreign land and made it possible for them to rebuild the temple.
Families came together, children listened to the old stories, and the people thanked God for his faithfulness.
The Bible reports that God had filled their hearts with joy.
After all the years of uncertainty, this was a feast no one would soon forget.
π God Completes What He Begins
This chapter shows that Godβs plans sometimes take longer than people expect. There were times when everything stood still. There were moments when the future was uncertain.
But God never lost sight of his goal.
He opened doors, moved hearts, and made sure his people could keep going.
In the end, the temple stood there because God had remained faithful.
And that same faithfulness accompanies people today as well.
π What This Chapter Shows
This chapter shows that God completes his plans, even when it sometimes takes a long time. Obstacles cannot stop him.
We also see that God often sends help from directions no one would have expected.
π£ Summary
The decree of King Cyrus is found in the royal archives. King Darius confirms the permission to build the temple and even supports the project financially. The work is successfully completed, the temple is dedicated, and the people joyfully celebrate the Passover feast.
