🌱 GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

🌧️ Lesson 11: Setbacks

πŸ“˜ 11.2 Be Made Well

Faith that reaches for Jesus despite suffering

πŸ“– 1. Introduction

Some people carry physical, emotional, or spiritual wounds with them for many years. Often, they have already tried many things to find healing, peace, or answers, and yet their distress remains. The woman in Mark 5 was in exactly such a situation. For twelve years she suffered from an illness that not only caused her physical pain, but also excluded her socially and ruined her financially. Nevertheless, she did not give up hope. Her story shows how genuine faith holds on to Jesus even when all human solutions have failed.

πŸ“œ 2. The Biblical Foundation

In Mark 5:21–34, we meet a woman who had been sick for twelve years. She had spent all her money on doctors, but instead of getting better, her condition grew worse.

When she heard about Jesus, she made a courageous decision:

β€œIf I only touch His garment, I will be made well.”

With her last strength, she pressed through the crowd and touched Jesus’ garment. Immediately she was healed.

Jesus stopped and asked:

β€œWho touched My clothes?”

Although many people were touching Him, Jesus recognized the touch of faith. Finally, He said to the woman:

β€œDaughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

🌍 3. Connection to Today

Even today, many people experience situations in which they feel exhausted and hopeless. Some struggle for years with illness, family problems, loneliness, or inner wounds. Often people seek help in many places before recognizing that their deepest need can only be answered by Christ.

Like the woman in the story, we sometimes face the decision:

  • Do I give up?
  • Or do I go to Jesus despite my weakness?

The story shows that God does not respond to our strength, but to our trust.

πŸ’‘ 4. Central Message of the Lesson

πŸ‘‰ Jesus overlooks no one. Whoever comes to Him in faith finds acceptance, help, and hope in Him.

✝️ 5. Theological Focus

This event reveals one of the most beautiful truths of the gospel: God’s attention is directed toward the individual.

Outwardly, the woman was just one person among hundreds. The crowd surrounded Jesus from every side. Many touched Him accidentally. Many wanted to see or experience something. But only one person touched Him in faith.

Here an important difference becomes visible:

There is a difference between religious nearness and a genuine connection with Christ.

Many people know Jesus:

  • through tradition,
  • through church,
  • through knowledge,
  • through habit.

But the woman wanted more than mere nearness. She sought a personal encounter.

Her situation was especially difficult. According to the Mosaic law, because of her flow of blood, she was considered unclean. As a result, she was not only sick, but also socially isolated. Many people avoided her. She probably lived for years with shame, rejection, and loneliness.

But this very woman was not rejected by Jesus.

It is remarkable that Jesus did not simply let her go secretly. Although she had already been healed, He stopped and looked for her. Why?

Not because He needed information.

He wanted to give her something even greater than physical healing.

He wanted relationship.

When Jesus finally addressed her, He called her:

β€œDaughter.”

This is one of the tenderest forms of address Jesus uses in the Gospels. The woman receives not only her health back, but also her dignity, her value, and her identity.

Furthermore, Jesus makes clear:

β€œYour faith has made you well.”

The garment did not possess magical powers.

The touch itself did not heal her.

The healing happened through trust in Christ.

In this way, Jesus shows a central principle of the gospel:

God’s power is received through faith.

🌱 6. Spiritual Deepening

The story of the sick woman is also a picture of the spiritual condition of many people.

For twelve years she had tried to solve her problem herself. She invested time, energy, money, and hope. But no human solution could remove her distress.

In the same way, people often try to solve their inner problems in their own way:

  • through success,
  • through relationships,
  • through distractions,
  • through material things,
  • through their own effort.

But the deepest longing of the human heart can only be fulfilled by Christ.

What is especially impressive is the woman’s determination.

No one would have blamed her if she had stayed at home.

She was sick.
She was weak.
She was exhausted.

Nevertheless, she set out on the way.

Her faith did not consist in having no obstacles.

Her faith consisted in not allowing the obstacles to stop her.

This is exactly what Romans 5:3–5 also describes:

β€œWe also glory in tribulations.”

Paul explains there that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope.

The woman had experienced exactly this path.

Years of suffering had not destroyed her faith, but had deepened her desire for God’s help.

Often we think faith is the absence of doubts or pain.

The Bible shows something different.

True faith often arises in the midst of suffering.

It grows where people learn to hold on to God’s goodness despite unanswered questions.

Another important thought is that the woman actively went toward Jesus.

She did not wait passively.

She sought Him.

Many Christians desire spiritual growth, but remain spiritually distant.

The woman shows us the opposite:

  • She heard about Jesus.
  • She believed His words.
  • She sought His nearness.
  • She stretched out her hand.

In the same way, Christ invites us today to actively seek His presence.

Not out of duty.

But out of the trust that He is the answer to our deepest need.

πŸ”§ 7. Application in Daily Life

Practical steps:

  • Bring your worries consciously to Jesus.
  • Do not give up hope when prayers are not answered immediately.
  • Seek Christ’s nearness daily through prayer and Bible study.
  • Trust God’s possibilities more than your circumstances.
  • Remember that Jesus also knows your personal story.

❓ 8. Reflection Question

What burden or wound have I perhaps been carrying for a long time that I should consciously bring to Jesus in faith today?

🌟 9. Final Thought

The sick woman received more than physical healing. She found hope, dignity, peace, and a personal encounter with Christ. Her story reminds us that Jesus still sees those who feel overlooked today, and that no suffering is too great to entrust to Him.
